Quality Meat Products - Western Style

One of only two USDA meatpacking plants in North Dakota, Prairie Packing is a business on the move.

It is easy to see the pride that owner/operator David Salis takes in his business just by walking in the door. David has been in the meat business for years. Prior to the purchase of Prairie Packing, he was a partner in a local grocery store. Like many entrepreneurs, David was looking for a new challenge; however, he wanted to stay within his field. Two local meat producers, David Herriot and Bob Gannaway, approached him with the idea of opening a meat packing plant. This idea was mutually attractive, it would provide David with the challenge he was looking for and the producers with an outlet for their product.

After weighing all the options, including building a new plant, the partners made a decision to purchase the existing Prairie Packing business. David credits SBDC for streamlining the financing and planning process for them, along with doing a great deal of footwork to make their dream come true.

Since finalizing the sale on August 1, 2002, they have upgraded equipment and now are focusing on building the business. Currently David's focus is on marketing products and finding new outlets for products. Prairie Packing employs six full time and four part time employees and is looking to add more staff as production increases.

Prairie Packing's vision is to provide high quality products and serve the customers' needs all of the time. Their goal is to maximize the capability and capacity of the plant. David is very excited about a new marketing alliance that is in the process of being formed with four other packing plants and a local grocery store. This alliance will take the best meat products from these businesses and market them under one label for distribution by the end of 2006. In addition to allowing David and his team to fulfill their vision and goals, this alliance will streamline marketing for all the businesses involved, allowing more time for these businesses to do what they do best - provide the best products to the customers they serve.
